The Chair for Landscape Management at the University of Freiburg (Germany) invites applications for a research position in the EU-funded project “Sustainable futures for Europe’s heritage in cultural landscapes: Tools for understanding, managing, and protecting landscape functions and values (HERCULES)”. The project offers unique opportunities for interdisciplinary cooperation around the cultural landscapes approach within a group of researchers from 11 European countries.

Responsibilities

With space for pursuing individual interests, the candidate will

• contribute to a Pan-European systematic review on actors in landscapes and their management practices,

• analyze landscape services and values as perceived by local actors (case studies, sites to be defined; participatory mapping and other approaches),

• identify local-level landscape stewards and patterns of their activities (social-ecological inventories in several case study areas),

• identify reasons and requirements for landscape stewards to become active and successful (e.g., Q-method and/or other approaches).

Qualifications

We seek a person who

• holds a university degree (Diploma or Master) in a relevant discipline (e.g., environmental sciences, human geography, landscape studies, natural resource management),

• is experienced in carrying out and analyzing social surveys or interviews,

• has a strong interest in human-nature interactions and transdisciplinary research,

• is able to communicate with local actors in the land-use sector (e.g., farmers, tourists),

• is willing and able to work in an international and interdisciplinary team,

• is willing and able to elaborate scientific publications.


Employment conditions

Employment is part-time (50%) over three years. We ideally seek a PhD candidate. Alternatively, the position is open for a Postdoc who will complement it by individually acquired projects. Start date is December 2013, with a four-month probationary period. For better integration of work packages within the project, the candidate should be willing to spend approximately four months at the University of Copenhagen, Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management, Denmark (costs will be covered). Salary is according to German pay scale EGr. 13 TV-L.

Desde 1979 el Instituto de Instituto de Ordenación del Paisaje perteneciente a la Universidad de Freiburg, ha venido investigando temas relacionados a la antroposfera. Sus investigaciones no sólo están focalizadas en la ecología del paisaje, sino también en las personas que habitan en el lugar. Por esta razón, los estudios en el Instituto de Ordenación del Paisaje comprenden temas relacionados con los bosques, así como también con los cursos de agua y la problemática social.
